Dorothy Ella is the reigning disco-pop queen of the Derby and Nottingham music

scene. Her bubbly personality and, sometimes fiery, songs, as well as a huge party-like

energy she performs with, have made her a favourite amongst gig-goers. She recently

released her EP, Feeling So Free, and so we went down to the EP launch and had a chat

about it!

Could you tell us what the EP is about?

D: 3 years ago, I set off on a road trip around New Zealand with my best friend. In the

middle of that adventure, I went through a tough breakup and began writing songs, without

realising they’d mark the start of a life-changing journey. This debut EP captures that

transformation: staying true to who you are, finding strength and rediscovering a voice you

thought you’d lost. It’s a story of courage, freedom, and self-expression. Travelling to the

other side of the world reminded me who I am, and now, I’m finally living in a world where I

can be free.

What else has inspired this EP?

D: This EP was inspired by healing and rediscovering who I am. Artists that have had a

huge influence on me with these songs are Remi Wolf, Sigrid & Eloise. These female

artists are very empowering and I’m very inspired by their lyrical honestly and freedom to

express themselves.

What’s next for you?

D: Christmas is fast approaching so I’m playing lods of gigs around Derbyshire and having

my song Christmas What?! on repeat until everyone is full of seasonal cheer! I’m going

back to New Zealand in January which feels like a full circle moment for this EP. I have

some new music to be releasing while I’m away and I’ll hopefully be playing some acoustic

shows while I’m out there and writing more songs. I’ll be back summer 2026 to hopefully

take over festival season in the UK, my favourite time of year!

The EP essentially acts as Dorothy’s way of expressing ill feels towards the relationship

in a very positive way; she sees it as growth. This is represented in the funkiness of Talk.

Talk is about people who, well, talk too much and lie and don’t act on what they say, but it's

laid out in such a moveable way, and her band convey this so well. At the EP launch, her

live band perform the EP in full, with her, and this helped to elevate the feelings conveyed in

the EP. Live, Dorothy and co are a simply unstoppable force of high energy music, with the

instrumentals being simply fantastic and the vocals pronounced, emotional and radiant.

Dorothy Ella is a must-see act. Her EP, Feeling So Free, is out now.
