Statefall sneaked onto the scene with their heavy rock riffs and catchy metalcore melodies, in the middle of 2023 - ushering in a new reality, as they cryptically advertised back then. Their goal is to “create a shelter for the lost and abandoned”, and they brought this to life with the release of their debut album, Citizen, following their first live shows in 2024, supporting Samurai Pizza Cats on the ‘Beer and Pizza’ Tour. But with only one release in 2025 (a heartfelt cover of Thirty Seconds To Mars’ The Kill (Bury Me), with a gritty, guitar-heavy breakdown), it was hard to figure out what the state of Statefall was.
Until now.
The new chapter of Statefall begins with their brand new release, Lunar. Out of the gate, Fabio DeDominicis’ riffs are a true driving force behind the single, chunky and fun to chew on, paired perfectly along with Jan Euler’s ground-shaking bass. And when they are combined with the ethereal vocals of Jasper Roelofsen, the track feels as though you are being pulled between the serenity of the sky and the complexity of the underworld - reflected in the nature of the lyrics.
From my understanding, the speaker is unable to let go of a relationship that brings them comfort despite it being an unhealthy one. And it is likened to the relationship between the sun and moon, which is often a romantic trope in media but, where the soft joy is usually depicted, the darkness of it is explored here;
“I’m the moon but you’re the sun // without your light, I’m not seen by anyone”
It’s catchy. Incredibly catchy. I hadn’t even finished the first listen through when I was humming along to the chorus. And no wonder, when they pull from influences like Dayseeker and Bad Omens, whose vibe is completely encapsulated by this track with the distortion and seamless transitions between heavy and clean vocals; it could fit perfectly onto the next Bad Omens album but it is well and truly a Statefall statement piece.
If you haven’t yet, I implore you to check this band out. I think that they are on the brink of something sonically exciting and hauntingly beautiful; a place for the lost and abandoned to rest with their restless hearts and find comfort in the alternative.
