Bury Tomorrow Are Back: Sx - Single Review

Just on the horizon, there’s a brand new era for Bury Tomorrow and it’s being ushered in by their latest single, Sx. As the first release under their independent imprint, Dea†h Records, it is clear that the band are hungry for their fresh start.

But Sx is far from fresh and clean; it is filthy and grimey, with a steady heartbeat and chunky guitars. It has - what I affectionately refer to as - ‘underground, sewer rat’ vibes; something that feels like it's out of place in sunlight but instead embraces the shadows and the hard truths of the world. The dark techno distortion that opens the song elicits images of the blood rave in Blade (1998). The track would find itself home as the soundtrack to an iconic fight scene with its consistent pacing and lyrics that reflect the fight between light and darkness, and what it is to be human.

Dani Winter-Bates acts as the perfect ringleader for Sx, with his vocals being the standout factor on the track. He commands with his incredible range of screams, from gutterals to fries, and you can sense the freedom in his voice that comes with this new era. It’s fun - it’s dark and true to the band’s metalcore roots but it’s so fun.

I think this is an excellent step in a new direction for Bury Tomorrow. The Southampton-based band are playing with sounds that we haven’t heard from them before and have created something that is so gratifying to listen to. I am eager to see where this new direction is leading for not only the sound of Bury Tomorrow but the band themselves.
